The following project involved designing a cover for Special Purpose Machine. Pune based manufacturing company was developing this machine for European market. The task was to design machine cover for simplicity in assembly, low cost & machine weight reduction with the use of new material and process.
Design Process was divided in 5 parts:
1. Ideation sketches and initial 3D modeling
2. Detailing of selected concept
3. Feasibility study with the help of supplier
4. Refinement based on feasibility study
5. Engineering drawing, first part manufacturing, assembly, trial & design submission.
Project was started by studying existing machine, getting machine details and packaging dimensions. Ideation phase involved sketching on old machine layout and exploring materials with sheet metal, acrylic and fiber glass plastic.
Second part in this phase was creating rough 3D models for better understanding of form and assembly.
The various problems that were discovered at detailing phase from service and assembly point of view were tackled in detailing phase. Fiber glass plastic material was selected for manufacturing with thickness of 4.00mm for better aesthetics, easy manufacturing process, low initial investment and low part cost. Top steel plate was added to protect fiber glass cover from any material spill from both tanks.
Along with machine cover parts, graphics and typography were also designed aligning with company color and graphics theme.
During final submission phase, manufacturing process was closely monitored to avoid any misperception. Continuous design support was made available to check pilot part and its assembly over existing machine and final assembly with finalized colors and vinyl typography stickers were submitted to client.
Old ‘Smart Pump’ design is now going to be supplied in domestic market and ‘TWIN PUMP 2kNext Gen’ will be supplied all over the world with next generation technology and design.
